What is Travel Basketball?

For Those That May be New to Travel Basketball

What is Travel Basketball?

Travel basketball consists of organized teams that compete against other town teams in a league (Metrowest League).  The teams are for grades 4 – 8, (boys and girls) and potentially partial or full 3rd grade teams for boys and girls depending on the number of total kids participating for the 4th – 8th grade.  Summary of Schedule for Travel Basketball:

  • There will be two practices and one game per week (the games are usually on Sundays unless re-scheduling is necessary).  Game times vary.
  • The regular season consists of 12 games, (typically 6 home and 6 away plus tournaments (usually 2)).  For games, (both away and home), parents/guardians or other appropriate person(s) will be required to get the player to and from the games.
  • After the final regular-season game the playoffs begin (beginning of March – Mid March, depending on how the team does).  The playoffs are single elimination, which means if you lose one game then you are done for the season.

Travel basketball is a competitive league and therefore depending on the number of kids that choose to play for any grade, tryouts are required to set the roster(s) for the teams.  As a result, cuts can be possible depending on the amount of kids trying out for any grade.

Travel Basketball Schedule:

  • Season starts the Tuesday after Columbus Day
  • Practices typically are from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m, (1 hr. long), on the two days allocated for each team.  The practice schedule is released after tryouts and teams are selected.  The younger age teams get the earlier times.
  • Games typically start the first weekend (Sunday) in December.  The regular season games are every weekend, (Sundays), until the end of February.
  • The playoffs start in the beginning of March and can go until Mid-March.  The playoff games are scheduled by the league and can be any day or evening of the week.
  • **It is common for tournaments to be scheduled over: Thanksgiving (4th Grade Jamboree Tourney), Christmas/New Years break and February Vacation Break.  The February Vacation Break can have games on both weekends of the break.
  •

Guidelines and Commitments - All Players

Travel basketball is a commitment and therefore needs to be a very high priority throughout the season.  Due to the tryout process and potential cuts made, players that are chosen on teams need to be fully committed regarding attendance of practice and games.  Players should make all practices and games unless extenuating circumstances exist, (ex: illness, family emergencies, etc…).  If a player or players miss multiple practices and or games, then playing time and participation will be at the coach’s discretion moving forward for the remainder of the season.

How do I sign my child up for Travel Basketball?

To signup your son(s) or daughter(s) for travel basketball you will first register them on the Bridgewater Youth Basketball Website.  The website is:
